You might recognize his gentle Irish lilt from the radio spots that air each year on local stations, or you might be familiar with his presence in UGM’s dining hall as seen on TV news shows during UGM’s annual community meals at Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas. Or maybe, after almost 30 years steering one of Vancouver’s most noteworthy non-profits, Maurice McElrea has become someone you’ve had the chance to get to know on a more personal level. On November 4, the legacy of UGM’s third president will be celebrated with a farewell banquet at Vancouver’s Convention and Exhibition Centre at Canada Place. We hope to gather over 500 of UGM’s supporters together in one place, to give a deserving send-off to Maurice as he steps into a well-earned retirement. If you’ve always wanted to see your money make a difference in Vancouver, 60% of the ticket costs will help give a graduate from UGM’s Alcohol & Drug Recovery Program a post-secondary education, through the Maurice & Lois McElrea Scholarship Fund. This innovative initiative means that someone who has previously never had the money or ability to attend college will have their lives transformed by this unique opportunity.
Tickets are available for a cost of $150 each, or $1500 for a table of ten – so invite some friends, and head down to Canada Place on November 4 to learn how UGM has grown dramatically under Maurice’s leadership, adapting to the times to offer new and greater services to those who need it most in our city.
