On Friday, August 15, one of the cherished clients of the New West Drop In Centre passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.Richard Belanger, was remembered at a memorial service hosted by the UGM staff where 30 friends of the deceased were in attendance. Joven Antolin, Assistant Manager, officiated the memorial service and had the opportunity of leading many to give testimonials of the impact that Richard Belanger had on their lives. Two of the testimonials were given by friends who knew Richard for 40 and 50 years respectively.
In addition to the many friends, staff from the Lookout Emergency Aid Society, where Richard resided, were also in full attendance to provide their support.
At the conclusion of the service, a song by the musical group Bee Gees, was played as it was one of the favorite songs that Richard enjoyed. Refreshments and a time of sharing, brought a very emotional day to an end.
Richard Belanger will always be remembered for his daily interaction with staff and clients playing the card game, ‘crib’, which was always his trademark. His ability to collect pens, which numbered in the thousands, will also be an aspect of Richard’s life that will highlight the many good memories that his friends and family will always have.
All who attended thanked UGM for being willing to host this important occasion that allowed people to appropriately and fondly remember a dear departed friend. Richard Belanger had always considered the UGM Drop In Centre his home.
