John's Story

September 17, 2008

John was on the street addicted to heroin and cocaine for about 4 years, This was combined with a with a major depression. He had come to have a relationship with God about 5 years before that. He loved God deeply then but his depression made him feel like God didn’t love him and his life quickly spiraled out of control.

He had heard about Union Gospel Mission before but he didn’t think he was low enough to receive their help. There were others more needy than him he thought. One time he saw the staff from the Mission Drop-In Centre on the street giving out hot chocolate and he was invited to the drop-in for the worship time. Hearing about the worship time, John knew he had to come and check it out.

John came to the Drop-In and thoroughly enjoyed the worship! He stayed for dinner and started dropping in more often and really felt God was at work. He was still using drugs at the time but it wasn’t making him happy anymore. He kept coming to the drop in, getting to know people and enjoying the worship. Soon God spoke to him and told him He wanted John to clean up and follow God’s path. He had learned not to argue with God and soon cleaned up.

John knows his life isn’t over yet and now he is working full time and involved in a street ministry in Abbotsford helping people addicted to drugs he tells them his story of hope!
