Jolene once sought the help of UGM to find a safe, clean and affordable place to live. She found that at UGM’s Maurice McElrea Place, an affordable housing building on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Today, Jolene is an Outreach Worker at UGM’s Women’s Drop-in Resource Centre where she cares for women and children living in poverty and helps them take steps to regain their lives.
Before she began working as an Outreach Worker, Jolene volunteered with UGM at the Vancouver Drop-in Centre. Though a little nervous before her first early morning volunteer shift at the Vancouver Drop-in Centre, Jolene was greeted warmly by the men huddled outside the centre and as she started to get to know the guests better, any apprehension subsided.
“I always had a heart for the underdog. I always wanted to stand up for the person who couldn’t help himself. But I never really had a heart for the people in this neighbourhood. As I started working at the Vancouver Drop-in, though, they all became individuals to me. I love the very unique characters down here!”
Jolene decided to commit even more time to volunteering at UGM, and began to feel called to work with women at UGM’s Women’s Drop-in Centre. “I was praying for God to put me in the place where I could be most effective in helping people,” she recalls.
While she was contemplating how she’d like to serve the women of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, Jolene received a phone call from UGM saying there was a job opening at the Women’s Drop-in Centre and that she might be a great fit.
Now Jolene works each day doing what she loves. “It’s always a great day at UGM. No matter what goes on that may be tough, there are always so many good things that happen every single day. So much beauty in the relationships people have here!”
Here a short message from Jolene.
