A new multifaceted facility for the homeless, addicted and vulnerable breaks ground

More of the hard-to-house will soon be getting off the streets and finding the help they need. On Wednesday, July 29, 2009, Union Gospel Mission publicly announced its single, largest expansion in the organization's history: the construction of a much-needed new building. Located at 601 East Hastings, behind the current location, the development will greatly increase the organization's capacity to address the growing concerns of poverty and homelessness on the Downtown Eastside.
In 2005, the decision to approve construction of the 71,000 square foot, six-storey facility was based on high demand for UGM's Alcohol and Drug Recovery Program, year-long waitlists for UGM's abstinence-based housing, and a gap in the availability of services for women and children. Since the decision was made, the needs have become even more pressing.

"Last year, 406 people, 61 percent of whom self-identified as homeless, applied to UGM's Alcohol and Drug Recovery Program," explains Bill Mollard, Union Gospel Mission President. "That's 406 people asking for help, willing to do what it takes to get free from their addiction. And we only had space for 115. It's heart-breaking -- but it's not the end of the story."

UGM is pleased to announce that two levels of government have stepped in to help fund the $31 million dollar project. The Province of British Columbia is providing $12.1 million in funding and the City of Vancouver is providing a contribution valued a $400,000, as well as a possible investment of an addition $1 million.

"Our government is helping British Columbians who are dealing with homelessness and addiction issues by supporting new housing opportunities," said Rich Coleman, Minister of Housing and Social Development. "Through partnerships like this, we are delivering on our commitment to provide shelter and supports that will help people become healthy and achieve independence."
