On the corner of East Hastings and Princess lies an oasis for women and children living in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. UGM's Women's Drop-in Centre is open Monday through Friday and guests can find a warm meal and a hug from one of our women's outreach workers.Afternoons at the centre are filled with exciting activities. Tuesday is karaoke day and visitors can belt out their favorite hit, or enjoy a round of bingo on Thursday. Beauty Night is the most anticipated event, where once a month, guests are treated to a make-over by volunteers and staff. The drop-in is a building full of love but time had begun to leave its mark on the walls of this well-used building. The drop-in was in need of a little love and Stephen Sutch, a local designer and entrepreneur, wanted to help.
Stephen owns Koolhaus, a Vancouver-based home and interior design store, and was on a mission to bless the women and children that use the Women's Drop-in Centre.
Stephen donated countless hours of his design time, top of the line furnishings, and was also able to involve several friends to help with the project. Original artworks, paint, blinds and a television were among the many items donated. In total, the generous gift is worth over $60,000, but to the guests and staff the improvements are priceless.
A guest shares, "It is inspirational. This place is my refuge." She goes on to say that, "You did a wonderful job here and I really appreciate it."
The once stark walls have been revived with vibrant colours. Beautiful lamps casting warm glows have softened the overhead fluorescent bulbs. Guests can select a piece of inspirational literature from mahogany cabinets to enjoy in a comfortable, modern armchair.
