Vancouver, BC -- The 11th annual Union Gospel Mission barbecue for the Downtown Eastside community on August 8, 2009 was a big success. The fun and relaxed atmosphere attracted thousands from the community throughout the day. The number of meals served this year was at an all-time high with a record 5,200 meals served. Hosted for the first time at Crab Park at Portside, with a spirited pirate theme, the event provided guests a hearty summer meal, live music, a kid's carnival and an Oceanside view. Fin, the Vancouver Canucks' mascot, joined in the festivities entertaining kids and adults alike.
More important than just serving meals, however, is the connection that
those in need made with a caring outreach worker and UGM's
life-changing programs. One man as able to be admitted into UGM's drug
and alcohol recovery program that day. Workers helped five others get
into other recovery programs, and one gentleman began a detox program.
Another individual came to an outreach worker, at the end of his rope,
threatening suicide. He is receiving the care and counselling he needs.
Numerous families have now been connected to UGM's Treasures After
School Program.
