What image comes to mind when you think of someone in need?

Perhaps it’s the man sleeping on the sidewalk near GM Place; the woman with the lost look in her eyes asking you for money on your way to work; or the scruffy-looking child making his way to school through a tough eastside neighbourhood.

Most of us have encountered such real life images and I’d venture that many of us have struggled with how to respond. As we try to reconcile our own blessed life with their sad situation, it can be easy to fall into the trap of stereotyping those who are poor, addicted, or homeless.

What image comes to mind when you think of someone in need?

At UGM, we’re honoured to know many of these people by name and we’re privileged to know their stories—what brought them to where they are today and who they are apart from their poverty, addiction, or homelessness.

There’s never one simple story or one typical path. Like you, we know every one of these people has a story, and each deserves a chance at a brighter future.

And this fall, that’s exactly what your gift will offer. You’ll make it possible to serve over 3,500 meals at our Thanksgiving Dinner, to provide programs for at-risk children, to offer highly effective recovery programs and that’s just the beginning.

When you partner with UGM, lives in Metro Vancouver are changed for the better. It’s no small feat, and it doesn’t take much for you to get the ball rolling. Your gift today could change the life of someone in need.

And be sure to turn to the Breaking Ground article about the future of UGM and what’s now being built at the corner of East Hastings and Princess. It’s an exciting time to be part of the work of UGM.

 Gratefully,

William B. Mollard
