Rising Needs, Increased Demand for UGM's Services

August 30, 2009

UGM’s mission has always been to meet the needs of our community—and those needs are rising. The growing issues of homelessness, poverty and addiction in Vancouver have created an increased demand for UGM’s programs and services.

Last year 406 people applied to UGM’s highly successful recovery program, but we only had space for 115.

There are long street line-ups for our daily meals and breadline, and year-long waitlists for our affordable housing units. Last year 406 people applied to UGM’s highly successful Alcohol and Drug Recovery Program, but we only had space for 115. That’s nearly 300 people who were ready to take an important step in regaining their independence whom UGM could not help.

The exciting news is that UGM is expanding. On July 29, 2009, we publicly announced the single largest expansion in our history: the construction of a much-needed new building. Located at 601 East Hastings, behind our current location, the development will greatly increase UGM’s capacity to effectively address the rising need on the Downtown Eastside.
