COVID-19

In the midst of this uncertainty, Union Gospel Mission knows the families and individuals we serve are among the hardest hit during times of crisis. We are seeing parents of low-income families scrambling to put food on the tables.  For many individuals, their jobs are hanging by a thread or have already been lost. There is a real need to provide daily necessities for the survival of those most vulnerable right now.

UGM is committed to caring for the community by distributing emergency food hampers, grocery gift cards, hygiene products and clothing to those in need. One way you can help is by donating emergency care supplies to support those who are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The following items will make a big difference in the health and survival of UGM’s guests during this pandemic:

  1. Canned soup or chili with 10g or more of protein

Most Needed: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have any health guidelines for the food donations?

  • Higher fiber options (4+ grams/serving)
  • Less than 35% of total calories from fat (zero trans-fat)
  • Little or no added sugar (Less than 35% of calories from total sugars)
  • Moderate sodium (less than 200 mg or 15% daily value/serving)
  • Snacks that are less than 200 calories
  • Items with shorter ingredient lists (fewer preservatives & additives)

Why do we specify new items?

We ask that you donate new and gently used items to ensure that all UGM guests are treated with utmost dignity and care. As a general guideline, only donate items that you personally would use or wear. Worn out items cannot be used and must be disposed at a cost to UGM. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity.

What happens to the items if there is a surplus?

In instances where emergency items are received and distributed, yet a surplus of goods remains, items will be allocated to the UGM Thrift Store. This process helps to support the community in a couple of different ways. The UGM Thrift Store primary focus is to support low income community members to gain financial independence and have the opportunity choose items for their homes or themselves on their own schedule. Finally, 100% of the proceeds go back into supporting UGM’s life-changing programs and services.

Do you need waterproof items?

Waterproof items are always in high demand. It’s no secret that Vancouver is a wet city, and no one knows this like those forced to spend most of their time outside. Waterproof jackets, gloves, shoes and more are all extremely useful.
