Job Summary

Reporting to the Chaplain, Hastings Chaplaincy and Outreach, the Front Desk Worker is responsible for greeting and assisting visitors, volunteers, guests, residents, tenants and staff in a courteous and professional manner.  This individual handles routine enquiries, directing more complex issues to the appropriate person or department.  They also provide general administrative support and assist in ensuring building security is maintained.  The Front Desk Worker acts as a back-up to the Men’s Shelter Workers, helping clients in crisis situations brought about by diverse problems.

This position is permanent, part-time position with the following weekly shift schedule: Sunday - Monday, 12am – 8am, and Thursday, 4pm – 12am.    Due to the need for this position to provide back-up to the Men's Emergency Shelter, this position is only available to male applicants.  For a copy of the full job description, click on the “Download Job Description” button on the left panel of this page.

Skill Set

The Front Desk Worker is someone who is in agreement with Union Gospel Mission’s Statement of Faith and has intermediate computer skills. The successful candidate must possesses a friendly, approachable personality with strong customer service skills, and have a demonstrated ability to deal with difficult situations in a respectful, tactful and diplomatic manner while using good judgment. They must also have the ability to function independently and frequently under pressure, while managing multiple tasks—including emergency situations. The ability to set appropriate boundaries with demanding individuals and deal with individuals in crisis in an appropriate manner is essential to this role.

These positions will have unsupervised access to vulnerable adults or children.  Therefore, the successful candidates must provide current criminal record checks that includes a vulnerable sector search as a condition of employment.
