A UGM Christmas – Over 3,000 meals to be served this Sat, just one of many Christmas activities at the mission this December

This Saturday, Union Gospel Mission will serve its 73rd annual Christmas Dinner for the community. Put on with the help of over 200 volunteers, the event provides a delicious holiday meal amidst a joyful family setting, complete with live music and beautiful decorations. The meal is free of charge and occurs at two Vancouver locations and one in New Westminster.

Saturday, December 7, 2013; 10:30am – 4:30pm (doors open at 10:00am)

    •    UGM’s Main Facility - 601 East Hastings (corner of Princess and Hastings)
    •    UGM’s Women & Family’s Centre – 616 East Cordova
    •    UGM New Westminster - 33071 Railway Ave (doors open at noon)

The Meal: 
    •    3,500 lbs of turkey (roughly 160 turkeys)
    •    800 lbs of mashed potatoes
    •    700 lbs of vegetables
    •    800 lbs of stuffing
    •    300 litres of gravy
    •    180 litres of cranberry sauce
    •    4,000 dinner rolls
    •    675 cherry pies
    •    400 litres of ice cream

UGM Chaplain Matt Hislop explains one of the many purposes behind the holiday dinner: “Christmas is often be a time where we look for purpose, so for those struggling with addiction, UGM is able to provide a safe space for that type of reflection. It also offers the immediate opportunity to seek help and take steps toward entering UGM’s comprehensive, live-in alcohol and drug recovery program.”
