BBQ in Oppenheimer Park to serve over 5,000 meals—UGM and Glowbal Restaurant Group partner to celebrate summer on the DTES
Vancouver, BC—Whether homeless, struggling, or simply someone who lives on the downtown eastside, Union Gospel Mission and Glowbal Restaurant Group, invite the entire community to enjoy a summer BBQ with a touch of class this Saturday (July 16). Not your typical burger and chips menu, six gourmet Glowbal chefs will provide guests with BBQ’d beef brisket, all-natural hot dogs, ranch-style potato salad, coleslaw and Nanaimo bars for desert. Last year they served 6,000 meals and are bracing for even more this year. Over 150 volunteers are pitching in to make the event a reality.
“Glowbal Restaurant Group is a true picture of social corporate responsibility,” says UGM President Bill Mollard. “They are the ones providing the food, the chefs and the servers. They are freeing up our staff to do what they do best—providing outreach opportunities on site to address immediate needs in the community and offer help to those in need.
“This is our forth event with Glowbal, and it truly is amazing,” he says. “When they initially came to us, wanting to do something in the community, it was for all the right reasons. It wasn’t about publicity, they just genuinely wanted to help and give back. You won’t see a lot of fanfare in terms of advertising their restaurant—just a lot of upscale restaurant workers getting out in the community and humbly serving others who may be different from themselves. The joy and genuine delight it has brought both Glowbal staff and those who are being served has been so rewarding for everyone.”
Mollard explains how the BBQ is a great connector not only between community members, but also between UGM and those in need. “Many people have come into our alcohol and drug recovery program as a result of learning about our programs at the BBQ.”
Kids in the community won’t want to miss the opportunity either. In addition to great food, kids will enjoy a bouncy-castle, a cotton-candy machine, and an entire kids-only park area just for them. All guests will enjoy the groove of the DJ brought in to set the mood.
