DTES BBQ: UGM prepares to serve 5,000 meals, Concert Properties provides support & 75th birthday celebration
Vancouver, BC—As homeless count numbers remain virtually unchanged from 2014, UGM reaches out to those in need as they prepare to serve 5,000 meals at its largest event of the year—the Summer BBQ. On Saturday, July 18, 2015, at Oppenheimer Park,UGM will be joined by Concert Properties who have helped provide not only the means to offer the event, but 100 of the 200 volunteers needed to run it. This is an extra special year as UGM celebrates 75 years of service with the community.
“At Concert, we take great pride in finding creative ways to give back to the city we call home," said Brian McCauley, Concert’s President and Chief Operating Officer. “The work that UGM has done over the past 75 years in Vancouver’s DTES is inspiring – it’s an honour to help them bring their largest event of the year to life along with 100 of my Concert colleagues."
The free community event offers a myriad of family-friendly activities such as a bouncy castle, face painting, a mini-carnival of games, and of course, cotton candy. Kids and adults alike can enjoy the delicious food and tunes by Hot Wax Mobile Music. To celebrate 75 years community support, Concert and UGM have provided a surprise this year—two large special cakes which will be cut and distributed at 12:20PM. Attendees will be able to write their own birthday message or expression of gratitude on cards for display.
Like UGM’s other community events, the BBQ provides a meal and makes the season fun and memorable for so many who struggle day to day, but its potential impact is much more profound. UGM meals are a chance for those struggling with homelessness, addiction and chronic poverty to connect with UGM outreach workers and to become acquainted with the live-saving assistance available to them
Mike Miller was once in that predicament. In 1994 he rolled into Vancouver on a Greyhound bus with $9 in him pocket and hope for a fresh start. He tried to make a life in New Westminster but old habits caught up with him and for a while his home was a newspaper dumpster. He bounced around from job to job but things felt pretty hopeless. Then he discovered meals at UGM.
“It always stood out to me because the food was such high quality,” he explains. “It was really nice to know that people cared enough to serve me gravy on a hamburger or a hearty soup with meat and real vegetables.”
Through the provision of meals, Mike was felt loved and cared for. It gave him the courage to turn to UGM for further help as he entered the alcohol and drug recovery program in 1996. Today Mike has been clean and sober for almost two decades, and serves as UGM New Westminster’s Head Cook, bringing hope and help through meals like the Summer BBQ.
