UGM To Serve 5,000 Meals to Low-Income Families, Homeless

Vancouver, B.C — Summer isn’t always easy for 42-year-old Louisa and her family. Raising two young children on a fixed income, Louisa’s summer is often less about celebration than simply getting by.

“We’re always choosing between two things,” says Louisa. “What’s more important…shoes or clothes, clothes and food or barbecues or something else? It’s always choosing, all the time.”

Thankfully, Louisa’s family will have a chance to celebrate summer on Saturday, July 15th when UGM hosts its biggest event of the year. Up to 5,000 meals will be served to those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness – along with low income families who can take advantage of face painting, bouncy castles and a mini-carnival of games, all meant to give those in the Downtown Eastside a moment of rest and relaxation.

“Homelessness and poverty don’t take a summer holiday – and children are often hit hardest,” says UGM’s Jeremy Hunka. “Studies show the child poverty rate in the Downtown Eastside is a staggering 64%. Our Summer BBQ brings a little relief and restoration to families and allows our Outreach Workers to connect to offer long-term support.”

The event is made possible by Rogers Sugar Vancouver of Lantic Inc., which operates just around the corner from UGM.

“Rogers Sugar Vancouver is thrilled to give back where we work,” says Gary Mustvedt of Rogers Sugar Vancouver. “We have been in the Downtown Eastside more than a century and see the struggles of many local residents. This is one way we give back – and we hope to have the privilege of continuing to sponsor the event in the years to come.”

“It’s something we look forward to,” says Louisa. “Everyone knows it’s going to be good, it’s UGM.”

Lantic Sugar Limited and Rogers Sugar Ltd. merged into a new operating entity now known as Lantic Inc., on June 30, 2008. The two companies had worked together as one for a number of years before the amalgamation. The finest traditions of both Sugar based companies form the foundation of a culture that is national in character and diverse in ambition. Rogers Vancouver, the former BC Sugar, is one of the three Lantic Sugar refining facilities. We have been in business since 1890 and recently celebrated 125 years of continuous operation. Milled Cane sugar is brought to the Port in bulk shipments; from it, the Refinery refines and produces a wide range of sugar and sugar containing products for consumers and industry, including the familiar retail ‘Rogers’ brands.
